Delayed Gratification

You're seated in a research office. Two envelopes on the desk. The facilitator explains calmly: 'The left envelope has one million won in cash. You can take it right now. The right envelope has one and a half million won, which you'll receive exactly one year from today, same time, same place.' 'Both are 100% guaranteed — the future payment is backed by the government.' He glances at his watch. 'You have five minutes to decide.' A million now. Half a million more. One year apart. You do the math — 50% in a year is better than any savings account. But your credit card bill is coming due, next month's rent is tight, and — is the you of one year from now even the same person as the you sitting here right now? Both envelopes catch the light. They look about the same thickness. The facilitator watches, quietly.
